About Morgan C. Smith

Selective by Choice. Unwavering by Principle.

Morgan C. Smith brings more than twenty-five years of high-level litigation experience to his Telluride-based law practice. He began his career as a trial lawyer in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he handled complex tort, regulatory, and class-action matters and helped build The Arns Law Firm into one of California’s premier plaintiff firms. Morgan tried and won numerous multi-million-dollar jury verdicts and authored multiple appellate and California Supreme Court briefs shaping workplace-safety and construction-injury law.

In 2011, Morgan founded Cogent Legal, a litigation-graphics and trial-strategy firm now known nationally for transforming complex evidence into clear, visual persuasion. He later expanded into mock-trial consulting and founded California Hearing Officers, a firm that provides neutral advocates for administrative hearings across Northern California. In 2025, the litigation graphics part of Cogent Legal became Exhibit One Creative, and Cogent Legal continued the mock trial work under that name. His combined companies employ more than 30 professionals, reflecting both his entrepreneurial leadership and his reputation for excellence.

Now living full-time in Telluride, Morgan focuses his personal legal practice on the matters that matter most — Colorado land-use, water, and constitutional issues. Drawing on deep research skills, a lifetime of courtroom experience, and a commitment to public-minded advocacy, he selectively takes cases where principle, rights, and community impact are at stake, often without charge when the issue is sufficiently important.

Morgan’s legal career blends rigorous analysis, visual communication expertise, and a long record of standing up to powerful interests. His practice is built around one guiding idea: take the right cases, fight them relentlessly, and serve the community with integrity.
